Escape is one of our most basic needs. Fantasies, daydreams, trips to exotic lands – all remove us from the immediate, the humdrum rhythms of daily life.

Music and art, and, of course, fashion, are also escapes. They open doors to the transcendent; they project us into alternate worlds.

Since the end of World War II, the most potent source of escape has been science fiction. In the 1950’s, it was a scorned writing genre. By the end of the century it had exploded into a dominant position in popular culture.

Over the years, as science fiction novels became increasingly mainstream, painters who specialize in fantasy and science fiction have created illustrations for book jackets, posters, and magazine covers. One glance, and you are borne away into magical, distant, future landscapes.

We want to introduce you to some of the finest creators of science fiction art working today. Many science fiction paintings depict women in positions of power, and we have selected some of these for this pictorial.

Look at each image, and observe its power to draw you away, to join the story in the picture. Escape.
